The Alternative Arts Collective envisions a community where:

The arts are common in everyday life.

There is variety of artistic expression, including themes and content.

Where art provides a look into our deeper selves and provokes cultural exploration and evolution.

Where every person has a way of expressing, enjoying and enriching themselves and their lives through the arts.

Where artistic development is encouraged and given safe refuge from judgement.
    about

Mission Statement

We are committed to creating a local culture where the ‘alternative’ arts can thrive in the public sphere. We stand for the development, promotion, and expansion of alternative artistic forms, subjects, and methods outside those of traditional studio or theater art. We believe that art should not be contained in just a museum, gallery, or theater house but should exist in the world with us in the same extensive variety that exists in the people that create it. Specifically, we stand for art that pushes boundaries, provokes questions and reactions, and that stays with us after it is gone. The Alternative Arts Collective will do this via promotion, education, provision of facilities, and funding.

Goals

The current goals of the Alternative Arts Collective TriangleNC Chapter are as follows:
  1. To foster a cultural environment where alternative behavior and artistic exploration is encouraged and applauded.
To do this we will work with many other groups in the area including (but not limited to):

  2. To provide a common resource for artists, audiences, and the simply curious to find art and experiences that fit their interests or to expand their horizons.

  3. To promote artists and provide aid (legal, technical, educational, etc.) that fosters their growth in their artistic careers.

Current:

We currently have 2 sections that are very active in the region - Photographers and Performance Artists.

Photographers: Includes many photographic styles including Cosplay, Horror, Time-Exposure, Multiple-Exposure, Glamour, Figure, Exotic, Erotic and Bondage. These styles tend to run outside of the mainstream and are hard to find venues for showing and displays.

Performance Artists: Includes Burlesque, Buskers, singers, dancers, fire, circus, magicians and others.

These two groups have needs that are specific to their individual styles but also have many needs in common such as venues for their work. The AAC is working very hard to work with and assist these groups to make them more visible in the Triangle area while also providing them with resources necessary to improve and protect their showings.

We are currently looking at the Triangle Artworks Pop-Up Business-Kit and hope to use it to start providing new venues for both photographic exhibitions and performance arts shows. We are also working on a plan that might include a cross-over for our members where we would combine photographic display shows with performance artists shows. A win-win for both.
